A carpet is defined as a floor covering material made of woven material such as natural and/or synthetic fibers which is used for ornamentation, design or for utilitarian purposes. Carpets are used in residential homes and in business premises alike as such it is of no surprise it is a multimillion dollar industry. Carpet cleaning is for the purpose of maintenance, stain removal, beautification, removal of allergens and maybe done thru over the counter cleaners, professional cleaners, vacuuming and homemade cleaners.
The vacuum cleaner is arguably the most common carpet cleaning tool. Most if not all carpet owners own a vacuum cleaner. The vacuum cleaner uses a motorized air pump that is directed and controlled by a tube or any hollow material in order to suck in air and particles towards the area immediately surrounding it. Since a carpet is made out of woven material the suction created by a vacuum cleaner effectively removes relatively small and dry particles out of the weaves effectively cleaning the carpet. Depending on the traffic a carpet is subjected to, vacuuming should be done daily or once every week. For example, a carpet located in a residential home can be vacuumed once a week but a carpet located in a business office should be vacuumed daily. A very useful tip when vacuuming is that the carpet should be viewed as a collection of square feet or quadrants and vacuuming should be done by finishing one quadrant and then another either vertically or horizontally; second, is that the heavier the carpet the l
onger the vacuum should linger and the more agitation and/or repetitions should be made before moving on to another quadrant, paying special attention to places which receive more traffic.
Steam cleaning, is another process by which a carpet is cleaned. This is done by utilizing a dry brush, then treating the carpet with alkaline solution, then applying pressurized hot water, and lastly a mechanical dryer to remove dirt, stain and odor. This type of cleaning method is usually done by professional cleaners who use professional grade dry and wet vacuums, brushes and steamers. All this creates a cleaner carpet that lasts longer and will actually repel dirt longer than ordinary methods of cleaning. Using such a method entails considering the amount of dirt, frequency of cleaning and cost for each cleaning.
Carpet detergent and/or shampoo, is a type of cleaning method that employs detergents usually bought in groceries and/or hardware stores. This type of cleaning method is a wet cleaning method that requires application, stay on treatment time, brushing or agitation and drying time. An important tip when using wet shampoos and detergents is to follow the directions to the letter. Use the exact amount, wait the required amount of time, then brush or agitate as instructed for best results, skimming on one process or leaving on the detergent for a longer period of time will do more harm than good.
Home remedies, such as extra virgin coconut oil, lemon rinse, baking soda abound in do-it-yourself books and the internet. These types of cleaning method usually work but it is also important to note that once in a while a more thorough carpet cleaning should be employed since home remedies and regular vacuum cleaning will not remove the toughest dirt and harmful allergens as thoroughly as professional grade cleaning.
